چکیده

Submitted 12 May 2006; revised 24 Sep 2007; accepted 18 October 2007 Abstract. We are researching the interaction between the rule and the ontology layers of the Semantic Web, by comparing two options: 1) using OWL and its rule extension SWRL to develop an integrated ontology/rule language, and 2) layering rules on top of an ontology with RuleML and OWL. Toward this end, we are developing the SWORIER system, which enables efficient automated reasoning on ontologies and rules, by translating all of them into Prolog and adding a set of general rules that properly capture the semantics of OWL. We have also enabled the user to make dynamic changes on the fly, at run time. This work addresses several of the concerns expressed in previous work, such as negation, complementary classes, disjunctive heads, and cardinality, and it discusses alternative approaches for dealing with inconsistencies in the knowledge base. In addition, for efficiency, we implemented techniques called extensionalization, avoiding reanalysis, and code minimization.

SweetProlog: A System to Integrate Ontologies and Rules

This paper describes the design and implementation of SweetProlog, a system for translating Web rules into Prolog. It enables the integration of ontologies and rules on the Semantic Web. This is achieved via a translation of OWL ontologies described in Description Logics and rules expressed in OWLRuleML into a set of facts and rules described in Prolog. Finally, the resulting logic program is i...

DR-Prolog: A System for Reasoning with Rules and Ontologies on the Semantic Web

The development of the Semantic Web [Berners Lee et al., 2001] proceeds in layers, each layer being on top of the others. At present, the highest layer that has reached sufficient maturity is the ontology layer in the form of the description logic based languages, DAML+OIL and OWL. The next step in the development of the Semantic Web will be the logic and proof layers. Rule systems can play a t...

An Executive Approach Based On the Production of Fuzzy Ontology Using the Semantic Web Rule Language Method (SWRL)

Today, the need to deal with ambiguous information in semantic web languages is increasing. Ontology is an important part of the W3C standards for the semantic web, used to define a conceptual standard vocabulary for the exchange of data between systems, the provision of reusable databases, and the facilitation of collaboration across multiple systems. However, classical ontology is not enough ...

Typed Hybrid Description Logic Programs with Order-Sorted Semantic Web Type Systems based on OWL and RDFS

In the recent years rule-based programming in terms of declarative logic programming has formed the basis for many Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and is well integrated in the mainstream information technology capturing higher-level decision logics. Typically, the standard rule systems and rule-based logic programming languages such as Prolog derivatives are based on the untyped theo...

Towards Ontological Context Mediation for Semantic Web Database Integration: Translating COIN Ontologies Into OWL

The COntext INterchange (COIN) approach to information integration [Goh et al, 1999] [Bressan et al, 2000] [Firat et al, 2002] uses ontological mappings and enables powerful context-sensitive query mediation for semantic integration of knowledge across multiple heterogeneous database sources. Its existing applications include financial analysis for the financial services industry, as well as ai...
